More than 1,200 employed on Muskrat Falls project

Throughout January 2014, 1,245 people were working on the Muskrat Falls hydroelectric project and expenditures for the project totalled more than $51 million.

Nalcor Energy publishes monthly updates on the project.

In its latest update for January, Nalcor said the first horizontal directional drill borehole was completed for transmission cables in the Strait of Belle Isle. This is the first of three boreholes to be drilled in Shoal Cove.

Also in the report:

• The first metre of cable for the Strait of Belle Isle was prepared for production and delivery from Futtsu, Japan;

• A 1,500-person permanent camp opened at the Muskrat Falls site in Labrador;

• Construction was completed on a 150-person temporary camp in Churchill Falls;

• The main contractor, Astaldi, began mobilizing its equipment to the Muskrat Falls construction site in January. Employment levels are expected to remain lower in the first few months of 2014 as Astaldi mobilizes its equipment to the site prior to the start of the large civil work for the powerhouse and spillway;

• Throughout January, 1,245 people were working on all components of the Muskrat Falls Project;

• About 83 per cent of workers (1,031) were residents of Newfoundland and Labrador;  

• 770 people were working directly in Labrador;

• 41 per cent of the total workforce working in Labrador (317) were Labrador residents, and 46 per cent (145) of these residents are members of Labrador Aboriginal groups;

 • 216 women were working on the project, comprising over 17 per cent of the total workforce.

• Total expenditures for the Muskrat Falls Project were over $51 million in January, 2014. This includes almost $39 million to Newfoundland and Labrador businesses, representing 74 per cent of all project expenditures for the month.
