Bay de Verde Heritage Days started on July 28 and ended on Aug. 1. On Wednesday, we hosted our senior’s day, with approximately 100 seniors attending.
They enjoyed live entertainment by community residents such as Glenn Noonan, Don Keyes, Dale Walsh and many others. The Baccalieu Dancers also provided some old-fashioned square dancing, much to the seniors’ delight. A free lunch was provided by the Bay de Verde recreation committee. There was also poker action and teen and pre-teen dances on Wednesday night.
On Friday, we had our Kid’s Fun Day at the playground. There was a great turnout, with about 50 children in attendance. A free lunch, including fruit platters, was provided by the Bay de Verde recreation committee. The kids had fun playing all sorts of games such as tug-of-war, sack races and red rover, as well as free bounces in the Bouncy Castle. At the end of the day all of the kids took home a loot bag.
Unfortunately, the weather on Friday evening didn’t co-operate and family night had to be postponed. Many people ran for their cars as torrential rain poured out of the sky. Family night and the fireworks will now take place on Friday, Aug. 27 at the Bay de Verde Heritage Premises starting at 7 p.m. We will have live entertainment by Ronnie and Gerard Walsh, Bouncy Castle, Nevada Tickets, Canteen and many free prizes to be given away. The fireworks will be set off soon after it becomes dark. There’s no admittance fee.
Over 250 plates of fish-n-brewis were delivered Saturday morning to residents of Bay de Verde and surrounding communities. Thirty boilers of fish-n-brewis were donated by local residents of Bay de Verde. It was a great success
Saturday night the harbour was emptied out as everybody piled into the Roman Catholic hall for the adult dance. The dance was well attended and the music was excellent.
Even though the weather was a little cold and cloudy, many people turned out at the Heritage Premises on Sunday to enjoy the live entertainment, Nevada tickets, spins, bouncy castle and much more. Tickets were drawn on a quilt that was donated by Karen Riggs. The winner of the quilt was Patricia Noonan. There was also a draw for $1,000, with Betty Oliver the lucky winner. The winner of the 50-50 draw was Robyn Coish.
Overall, it was a very successful week, with all the participants enjoying the activities immensely. We look forward to Heritage Days 2011, which are scheduled for Aug. 5-7, 2011.
