Hayleigh McGrath of Branch competed in the Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador pageant March 1-4 in St. John’s and placed fourth runner up overall, first runner up in talent and was named Miss Teen Photogenic.
“Best weekend ever!”
That was Hayleigh McGrath’s Facebook page quote right after she competed in the Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador.
The 15-year old from Branch did very well for her first provincial competition. McGrath was fourth runner up overall in the pageant, placed first runner up in the talent portion of the competition, and was named Miss Teen Photogenic.
She won prizes for her efforts, including a photo shoot with Sara Rostotski, some other gift items.
Hayleigh’s mother, Colleen Eigo McGrath, said Hayleigh tried really hard to win the People’s Choice award, but didn’t get that “by the skin of her teeth.”
“I was told that Hayleigh and other competitors were neck-and-neck on that throughout the entire competition,” said Ms. McGrath.
Hayleigh has also been invited to compete in the national pageant in Toronto later in the spring, the Miss Teen Canada World competition.
But for Hayleigh, the reason it was the “best weekend ever” had less to do with the competition, and more to do with the fun they got to have, and friends they got to meet.
“We did so much that weekend,” said Hayleigh. “We went to Steele Communications, Government House, a couple of different restaurants and cafes, the Confederation Building, glow bowling. We did a lot of rehearsals. That was fun too. It was pretty good.”
Hayleigh had plenty of fun preparing for the competition as well, with hairstylists and make-up artists, and trying different things. Woodford’s Training Centre in Kelligrews came to the pageant to work on the competitors, providing the students at the centre with great training, and the young competitors with fresher looks for their hair and make-up.
“They were really good,” said Hayleigh. “That was a lot of fun.”
Hayleigh said trying to win was lots of fun, but being able to participate in such a busy weekend, that was non-stop for the girls, was the best part.
“It is so hard to explain why it was so much fun. We all got to meet so many girls, and we honestly can say we are all friends now. We all got close fairly quick,” she said.
Now, she’s got the national competition to look forward to this summer, and is excited about that.
“No, I’m not really nervous,” she said. “I feel good about it.”
The Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador competition will be broadcast on NTV March 25. Check local listings for details.
“I really want to thank my sponsors because if they weren’t able to help, this would have been much more difficult to do,” said Hayleigh. “Shine Executive Cleaners and Home Sweet Home Care Agency, both owned by Tina Kelland Nash was a good sponsor, as was the owners of the Cape Shore Cranberry Bogs, Reggie Careen and Marlene Coffey, along with my music teacher Robert Colbourne.”
The community of Branch was proud of their home-grown girl’s achievement, and to show it, held a reception at the community centre March 14, during the Singing Kitchen, where a former Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador from 2006-07 Amy Power was there to congratulate Hayleigh, along with the town mayor, Priscilla Corcoran Mooney, who spoke and congratulated Hayleigh on her achievement.
“She represented our town well, and we are all really proud of her here,” said Corcoran Mooney.
The Charter will be following up with Hayleigh this summer when she competes in Toronto, so stay tuned! For more information about the Miss Teen Newfoundland and Labrador pageant, visit their website at www.nfpageants.net.
