Five people made it to the Carbonear General Hospital perhaps a little quicker than they expected late last week. And not in the same vehicle they had left home in. En route, their car left the highway, overturned and they ended up having to complete the journey to hospital via ambulance.
The five women were travelling from the Salmon Cove area to the hospital in Carbonear reportedly to visit an ailing relative, when the accident occurred around 9:30 a.m. July 2 on the Neck Road in Victoria.
Cst. Greg Francis of Trinity Conception District RCMP told The Compass the five were taken to hospital where they were treated for non-life threatening injuries and held for observation before being released mid Friday afternoon.
Cst. Francis, the investigating officer at the accident scene said the car, a red Pontiac G5 was headed west along Neck Road when it attempted to overtake a westbound green Chevy Malibu.
According to the RCMP spokesman, at the same time the Pontiac was attempting to pass, the Malibu was attempting to make a left hand turn onto a dirt road near a garage. "The red car collided with the green car on the driver's side and lost control," Cst. Francis explained.
He said according to eyewitnesses at the scene, the Pontiac G5 "flipped a couple of times" in the air before coming to rest on the front lawn of a home on the north side of Neck Road - the opposite side to where the Chev had been turning. Before coming to rest on its roof, the vehicle also struck a pick-up truck parked in the driveway and caused extensive damage to a wooden deck on the west side of the dwelling.
In an on-line comment in response to the Compass website posting of the accident Friday, one of the people who lives in the home the car landed in front of said: "This happened on my front lawn. I am so glad the occupants of the car are ok! What a scary thing to have happen; they are very lucky."
Meanwhile, the police spokesman said the male driver of the Malibu was also the lone occupant of that vehicle. His vehicle sustained "minor damage to the front driver's side."
The Harbour Grace Volunteer Fire Brigade's extrication team were at the scene. While they didn't have to use their extrication device (jaws of life), team members did jack up the rear of the overturned vehicle to allow rescue crewmembers and paramedics to get the people out of the vehicle and into ambulances waiting to take them to hospital.
Asked if speed was a factor in the accident, Cst. Francis said it was too early in their investigation to say for sure, but "from all accounts it appears speed was a factor."
While he was unable to say if the overturned vehicle would be a "write off," the police officer said it did sustain "extensive damage."
It was also too early in the investigation to say if any charges would be laid.
Traffic was tied up in the area for most of the morning, while police, fire-fighters and paramedics practiced their respective professions.
The accident was one of two mishaps reported to Trinity Conception District RCMP Friday.
The second incident occurred on the Main Road in Makinsons. Cst. Greg J. Morrow said, "a single vehicle struck and injured a nine year old girl, who was riding her bicycle near the roadway." Cst. Morrow said, "the girl suffered minor injuries and was taken to Carbonear General Hospital and later released." Investigation into that incident is pending.
