The federal government has announced the dates for this year’s recreational food fishery.
Residents of the province will again be able to catch a few cod for the supper table for several weeks spread over two separate timeframes.
The first runs from July 21 to Aug. 12, while the second will start Sept. 22 and close Sept. 30.
Recreational fishermen are limited to five groundfish per day. However, the maximum boat limit when three or more people are fishing is 15 groundfish, including tour boats.
The recreational fishery is open to both residents and non-residents and there is no requirement for licences or tags.
The fishery will occur in all NAFO areas around Newfoundland and Labrador, with two exceptions — the Eastport and Gilbert Bay Marine Protected Areas (MPA) where recreational groundfish fishing will not be permitted.

Sorry Lorne, if you've left NL to work you don't just get to come back and fish when you feel like it. That fact that you feel that you deserve to be able to catch cod whenever you feel like it because you chose to work out of province is ridiculous. Basically, you are asking the government to grant you a special privilege because you're not living in the province? Why should you deserve the right to fish whenever it suits you when the rest of people living in the province have to adhere to government guidelines?
