rinity Conception District RCMP located a fugitive from justice, July 31 and returned him to the St. John’s Community Corrections Centre.
Const. David Marentette said RCMP located Gregory Pike at approximately 2 p.m. Tuesday near McDonald’s Restaurant in Bay Roberts.
The defendant “fled from police on foot into the nearby woods. Police chased and caught Pike without incident.
The RCMP spokesman said, at the time Pike, “was on statutory release after being convicted of armed robbery. The armed robbery occurred on Sept. 16, 2010 at the Shopper's Drug Mart in Carbonear.” The accused, “pulled a knife on an employee in Shopper's trying to rob them. He was arrested forthat offence, eventually pleaded guilty and was sentenced to two and ahalf years.
“He was released from Her Majesty's Penitentiary on July 3 of this year on statutory release to a half-way house,” Const Marentette explained . “On Monday, July 30 (he) failed to comply with the conditions of his release and went absent without authorization. A Canada-Wide warrant was issued for his arrest and it was believed that (he) may have returned to the Trinity Conception area.
“Trinity Conception RCMP continue to encourage the public to report situations of suspicious behavior to police,” the RCMP spokesman concluded.
