Tragedy struck the Trinity Bay town of Cavendish over the weekend when an elderly man died as a result of drowning.
At 3 p.m. on Aug. 4, Placentia-Whitbourne RCMP responded to the report of a man drowning near Cavendish after he had fallen from his boat.
The name of the deceased has been identified as Henry (Harry) Smith.
The 79-year-old Heart’s Content man had been fishing with his brother, David, when he stood up in the 14-foot aluminum craft and lost his balance.
Harry fell over, causing the boat to overturn and throwing David into the water as well. Both were wearing life jackets.
While David managed to drag himself on top of the boat, Harry was unable to do so and slipped back into the water.
David went back in for the Harry pulling him back to shore where he performed Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) for 25 minutes, but was unsuccessful in resuscitating the deceased.
