Deadly vehicle-bicycle accident claims Grates Cove man

Tragedy struck on the afternoon of Sept. 24 when a mail delivery van fatally collided with a cyclist near Grates Cove, at the extreme northern tip of the Baccalieu Trail.

The 78-year-old man was travelling along Route 70 at 3:35 p.m. in the afternoon and when making a turn was struck by the vehicle.

The victim succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Alcohol and drugs played no part in the accident.

The collision is being investigated by the RCMP and the traffic services unit. The name of the victim has not been released.

Grates Cove is located on the northern tip of the Avalon Peninsula.

    That is truly tragic. I used to be a personal injury lawyer, and even worked a couple of bicycle accident cases. I eventually had to leave that career, simply because it was desensitizing me to the suffering of my clients.
