The seventh Claude Garland Memorial Mayor's March in aid of the Heart and Stroke Foundation took place in Carbonear on Oct. 18 with many dozens of people taking part.
It was a cool, calm evening, perfect conditions for a stroll around the pond adjacent to the Conception Bay Regional Community Centre.
The march is a provincial fundraising initiative of the foundation, but has taken on a unique flavour in Carbonear, where large numbers of participants walk in memory of longtime community leader Claude Garland, who died suddenly on Oct. 19, 2004.
Garland served on council for two decades, and was mayor for seven.
Carbonear Mayor Sam Slade (front), pictured here starting the walk Thursday evening, said this year's event raised a record $6,500-plus, with Coun. Betty Forward chipping in a cool $400.
Slade was joined by, from left, Miss Teen Trinity-Conception Jessie Fewer, Steve Keats of the Heart and Stroke Foundation, Avalon MP Scott Andrews, Claude Garlard Jr. (obscured), Cairine Garland, and Deputy Mayor Ches Ash.
