Residents frustrated by wild driving habits of a few

Harry Strong is mayor of the Town of Old Perlican.

Frustrated residents of Old Perlican flooded the RCMP with complaints last week about what they described as the dangerous and erratic driving habits of a few on town streets.

A follow-up response by police resulted in the arrest of two males — a 19-year-old from nearby Bay de Verde and a 32-year-old from Old Perlican — on Tuesday, Nov. 6.

Mayor Harry Strong said the situation has been raising concern in the community for about a year. He described several near-misses with senior citizens attempting to cross the street, excessive speeding, residents being awakened during early-morning hours by roaring engines, and high-risk stunts.

"Four or five guys or whatever have basically been terrorizing an area of the town," Strong told The Compass.

Town officials had several meetings with the RCMP in recent months, and Strong described the level of co-operation as positive.

Police had stepped up patrols in the area, and there had been several encounters between police and the alleged offenders.

But it wasn't until police received "numerous complaints" last week that concrete measures were able to be taken, said RCMP Cpl. Brent Hillier.

"With the assistance of several residents/witnesses coming forward, the Trinity Conception District RCMP were able to arrest two individuals for numerous charges," Hillier explained in a news release.

The two accused were held overnight, and are scheduled to appear in court today (Nov. 7).

The 32-year-old is facing the following charges: dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, three counts of uttering threats, and three counts of mischief.

The 19-year-old was arrested for mischief (two counts), and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle (two counts).

"This is what we wanted," said Strong.

"We realize the police can only do so much, but we got excellent co-operation from them and they have managed to do something about it.

"Whether it will calm thing down remains to be seen."

A few punks terrorizing the rest of the law abiding citizens. Shows how much they care about other people. Send them out to an abandoned island and let them fend for themselves for a month. They would have a greater appreciation after that for life in general.
