Holyrood RCMP charged the driver of a semi truck last night with having a blood alcohol count three and a half times more than the legal limit.

Police were tipped off about the driver by a concerned citizen, who called to complain about an erratic driver on the Trans Canada Highway near Butterpot Park.

The RCMP described the suspect as a 37-year-old “professional” truck driver from St. John’s.

His first court appearance is scheduled for the end of January.

Holyrood RCMP would like to commend the public for its assistance in this case.

Organizations: RCMP, Trans Canada Highway

Geographic location: Butterpot Park

Apparently the qualifications necessary to become a 'professional' truck driver are much different in NL than anywhere else in the world. I wonder how long this driver was in training before achieving his level of expertise. Undoubtedly the courts will go easy on him because he didn't actually kill anyone - this time. A slap on the wrist, a caution not to do it again, and he'll be back on the roads in no time. The judge will probably claim that there were extenuating circumstances and, well, it's the Christmas season and that 'buddy' was under a lot of stress etc. etc. Personally I'd ban this 'professional' from driving for life but I suspect he'd just drive without a licence anyway. He evidently doesn't have much respect for the laws or fellow citizens.

I guess the word "professional" is used for lack of a better word in this case....should have his license ulled for good......

Eugene is only concerned about wiping out the moose. He is oblivious to the daily carnage on the highways!

A semi-rig driver...3 and 1/2 times over the legal limit...those guys can be scary sober. I, for one, have a great and profound respect for the semi-truck, for the size and weight, if nothing else. To think that this individual does not respect how lethal these rigs have the potential to be, clearly indicates that he has no respect for what he's in control of and for the people he's putting at risk. I would bet that this guy is the sort that pulls out in front of traffic, cuts people off and drives like he owns the road, simply because he can and he knows that in an accident, he's not likely to be the one hurt or killed. I hope this guy never gets behind the wheel again. Find another career, that doesn't involve thousands of pounds of potentially lethal equipment.

He should have been described as being a professional "scumbag" from St.John's. They need to throw the book heavily at this clown but won't.He'll get a lecture and get off scott free and be driving again in a few months. Imagine the potential tragic consequences of this loser driving a huge trunk, loaded drunk down the highway, especially when the divided lanes end.Luckily that citizen phoned him in or there could be several deaths to report today. You are a hero whoever phoned this in. The stupidity of some people never ceases to amaze me!
