The deep voice of Roger Barnett is well-known to many Newfoundlanders who heard the long-time broadcaster on VOCM for years. But to many in the central region, he used his considerable talents in many ways as a volunteer.

The long-time broadcaster passed away Dec. 19. Originally from Ottawa, he started work as a radio journalist in Grand Falls-Windsor in 1973. However, he was also involved in volunteering for many groups, including the local Lions Club. Barnett had also been nominated one year as Grand Falls-Windsor Citizen of the Year.

He was also a town councillor. Barnett was diagnosed with cancer and was being treated at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Care Centre.

Barnett, who would have been 60 on Dec. 21, leaves behind his wife, Dolly, and children Christopher, Amanda, Lynette and granddaughter Candice.

I got to know Roger and Dolly years ago at Windsor Stadium when his son Chris played with my son Matthew in minor hockey. Although they seemed so different from each other, they were a perfect fit and we had so much fun there watching and cheering our kids and eating those famous stadium fries that Lurch was so expert in making. When I moved on to other mills in the late 90s, I kept track (still do) of the goings on in Grand Falls and time and time again Roger's name would surface about some volunteer work he was doing or an involvement with a worthwhile cause. Reminds me of an old saying "Volunteers don't get paid, not because they're worthless, but because they're priceless." That was Roger. Dave Kerr
