The deep voice of Roger Barnett is well-known to many Newfoundlanders who heard the long-time broadcaster on VOCM for years. But to many in the central region, he used his considerable talents in many ways as a volunteer.
The long-time broadcaster passed away Dec. 19. Originally from Ottawa, he started work as a radio journalist in Grand Falls-Windsor in 1973. However, he was also involved in volunteering for many groups, including the local Lions Club. Barnett had also been nominated one year as Grand Falls-Windsor Citizen of the Year.
He was also a town councillor. Barnett was diagnosed with cancer and was being treated at the Central Newfoundland Regional Health Care Centre.
Barnett, who would have been 60 on Dec. 21, leaves behind his wife, Dolly, and children Christopher, Amanda, Lynette and granddaughter Candice.
