A man who is arguably this province's longest serving municipal politician — four decades — confirmed last week that he will not seek re-election when citizens of Heart's Content elect a new town council in September.

Don Blundon began serving as a municipal leader when he was appointed to the Heart's Content Local Improvement District in April 1973, six years after the young man from Bay de Verde moved to the community to teach at the former Holy Trinity high school.

The town elected its first town council in 1974, with the late Frank Rowe as the first mayor. Three years later, in the fall of '77, Blundon took over the top elected post in the town, and he's been mayor ever since.

When he leaves office in September, Blundon will have been been at the helm for 36 years. That's an impressive record of service, and Blundon is proud of his contributions over the years.

“It’s been an exciting life," Blundon said this week during an interview at the town council office.

Congratulations, For someone to dedicate this much time to the well being of their town , they deserve the utmost respect of their citizens. I always said that people should serve at least one term on council to know what it is all about. Again Don, great job and congrats on an outstanding council career.
