A ground beef recall that included some Kirkland Signature products at Costco nationally has been expanded to include additional beef products from Sobeys and Foodland supermarkets in Newfoundland.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is warning the public, distributors and food service establishments not to consume, sell or serve the ground beef products included in the recall because they may be contaminated with E. coli O157:H7.
A new list of products, voluntarily recalled by XL Foods in Alberta, includes medium ground beef, medium ground beef VP and frozen beef patties at Sobeys/Foodland stores and Sobeys store-made meat loaf in Newfoundland and Labrador and the three other Atlantic provinces, with “packed on” dates between Aug. 27 and Sept. 16.
The recall also includes Sobeys, Foodland, IGA, Metro, and Safeway stores in other provinces and beef products prepared for corporate and franchised stores of Loblaw Companies Ltd. in Ontario, Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, and Saskatchewan.

The CFIA says there have been no reported illnesses associated with the consumption of these products. This voluntary recall is part of an ongoing food safety investigation.
Food contaminated with E. coli O157:H7 may not look or smell spoiled. However, the CFIA cautions that consumption of food contaminated with this bacteria can cause serious and potentially life-threatening illnesses. Symptoms include severe abdominal pain and bloody diarrhea. Some people may have seizures or strokes and some may need blood transfusions and kidney dialysis. Other people may have permanent kidney damage and, in severe cases of illness, people may die.
