Hurricane Rafael is churning toward the Grand Banks, but forecasters say it isn’t expected to have much of an impact on storm-hardened Newfoundland.

Rain is expected for parts of the Avalon Peninsula today as moisture from Rafael’s impending arrival mingles with an area of low pressure.

But the Canadian Hurricane Centre says Rafael’s greatest effects will be felt at sea.

Heavy rain and hurricane-force winds are expected over parts of the Grand Banks today and Thursday as a weakened but still powerful Rafael moves through.

The large, fast-moving hurricane buffeted Bermuda on Tuesday with strong winds and heavy rain.

Forecasters say the hurricane’s top sustained winds have weakened to about 130 kilometres an hour.
