Newfoundland and Labrador Nurses’ Union (NLNU) president Debbie Forward says nurses are adamant about sending a message to the provincial government that safe staffing equals safe patient care.
“As registered nurses, we want to provide the best possible care to our patients and this can only be achieved through having the adequate amount of registered nurses on staff,” Forward said in a news release.
The NLNU’s biennial convention came to a close today in St. John’s after a week of events in the city.
More than 250 registered nurses and students attended the convention, which included a rally to raise awareness of the need for safe staffing and a visit to the St. John’s International Airport to show support for striking employees.
Other activities during the week aimed at strengthening the identity and showcasing the value of registered nurses.
“This week has been a great success,” said Forward. “We brought together registered nurses from across the province to talk about issues that matter most to them, participate in professional development sessions, and celebrate pride in the registered nursing profession.”
A number of resolutions were also passed during the convention, which aim to lobby government to reinstate professional development funding for registered nurses and to maintain registered nurse positions to achieve adequate and safe staffing levels.
