A new ship is about to join the provincial offshore supply and service fleet.

The 85-metre long anchor handling tug and supply vessel Atlantic Kestrel is now settled in St. John’s harbour, awaiting christening Thursday.

"This new vessel further enhances the Atlantic Towing Limited fleet to service a growing number of offshore oil and gas projects,” said Wayne Power, vice president of J.D. Irving Transportation and Logistics, in a news release on the new vessel. Irving is parent to Atlantic Towing.

“The size and overall capability of this ship will enable Atlantic Towing to access new markets and continue to grow with our existing customers," he said.

According to the statement, 24 new jobs will be created in crewing the Atlantic Kestrel.

The ship was purchased by Atlantic Towing from Jaya Shipbuilding and Engineering Pte. Ltd., a subsidiary of Jaya Holdings Ltd. of Singapore.

Premier Kathy Dunderdale will be christening the ship tomorrow morning at 11:30 a.m. The ceremony will be at at Pier 11, off Harbourside Drive.

Christened?! That is a reference to Christianity, so it goes without saying that I'm completely offended. I want an immediate retraction of this story, an apology from the governemnt of Newfoundland, sensitivity training for all public servants, and counselling for any Telegram subscriber who read this headline. Oh, and I'll be luanching a $5 million lawsuit for emotional distress. (which I would settle out of court for $2500 worth of Atlantic lotto tickets.)
