An emergency beacon registered to the MV Lyubov Orlova has gone off, according to an official with the Joint Rescue Coordination Centre in Halifax.

Capt. Wayne Jarvis says the beacon first started off going off this morning at 12:49 a.m. Emergency beacons can be activated manually or automatically by either being knocked or hitting the water. The beacon is registered to the MV Lyubov Orlova but whether that means it’s on the ship itself or was on a lifeboat that was on the vessel is uncertain. A life raft with the beacon could have gone overboard causing the beacons to activate, says Jarvis.

“It could have banged itself into operation. On the other hand maybe the vessel sank. Everything is speculation at this point,” says Capt. Jarvis. “We don’t know what caused it. The beacon just started going off. We’re just keeping an eye on the position for reports at sea just to make sure nobody runs into it but otherwise nothing is beng pursued on it.”

The location of the dead cruise ship has been a mystery since it drifted into international waters earlier this month. Canadian officials haven’t had a positive location on the ship since February 4. The Irish coast guard has been working with a number of satellite and geospatial companies to try and locate the ship out of fear it might be drifting towards their shores. The Irish coast guard thought perhaps they had found the vessel and that it was heading more toward Iceland but whether what they found was the Orlova is now bing called into question.

On Friday, a document published by the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency, an agency of the US Department of Defense, said they had located the Orlova about 2,400 km off the west coast of Ireland. They’re position put the Orlova at 49-22.70N and 044-51.34W. The beacon’s location is 51-46.00N and 035-41.00W.

So when an Emergency beacon goes of it's procedure to ignore it?. What if someone was stowed away on that ship?

    As I See It ......

I think this is all so sad. A once proud ship that served so well & so many in it's day is now rendered useless & cut adrift to it's own demise. Hmmm .... sounds familiar. Seems to be the way of our society ....... not in my backyard. Some pride & responsibility needs to be shown here & take charge of this sad & dangerous situation. I think this is irresponsible & disgusting.

In other news - its being reported that Harper was on board orlova. He mistook it for Canada and said it was an honest mistake since it was also going no where! The nation is waiting for the next update at this time. However considerting all the "good" journalists like Ms Wallin and Mr Duffy have been rendered inoperable due to their senate appointments, it is not clear if Canadian will be lucky to get an update anytime soon.

Wow...what an additon to the "undercurrent" to this story.....of Newfoundlanders' unquenchable thirst for truth and knowledge, and the contribution that the Telegram makes towards achieving it. Freudian, really. So it's Long Dick's, City Hall rackets, and Stephen Harper. Bravo.

Geesh Duffy, did we mess it all up by towing the ship away from all the offshore installations? That's right, we should have just let it collide with all that stuff and take bets on what would have happened.

If Google Maps is correct, those coordinates are about 500km and 1000km, respectively, east of Newfoundland. Funny how it's reported at as "2400km west of Ireland" when it's actually a lot closer to this side of the Atlantic.

Regardless of conspiracy theories (accident or intent), it still drifted into international waters.

It's obviously the ghost. Man, Hollywood couldn't make this stuff up any better; an honest-to-Murgatroyd, bonafide ghost ship. I smell an Earl Pilgrim book in the making- the thing practically writes itself!

I think I saw this boat at Paddies Pond this morning! I called the Coast Guard but they said: if its not rough later they would check-it-out. It was rather windy when I called them. LOL

Why would there be a lifeboat on a derelict vessel being towed for scrap? One would think that it would have been taken off and sold. If it were in that bad condition...I don't even want to speculate anymore, I just figure that the Russian mafia made it's money from this by now.

If you are interested in the Orlova story, check the National Post this weekend. An intrepid youngster there named Tristin Hopper has put together a nicely researched piece. Of course, he lives in Vancouver where people tend to give a rat's arse about stuff in general, whereas we here are apparently only interested in whether or not Long dick's hot dogs will rise again, and who started the latest shouting match at City Hall...... You can blame technology for your eventual inevitable demise, dear Telegram, but in your case it's a mercy killing.

NOT TRUE "The location of the dead cruise ship has been a mystery since it drifted into international waters earlier this month." It should read "Since Canadian Officials set it adrift in International waters"
