STEPHENVILLE — Two male residents of Stephenville, one 19 years old and the other 21, were arrested and have a charge of possession of stolen property pending following a fire in the Stephenville Manor early Tuesday morning.
Police said the fire alarm at the apartment building was activated at about 3 a.m. and the building was evacuated.
An investigation revealed the fire alarm was activated as a result of smoke from pizza burning in an oven. It was in that apartment the Bay St. George police discovered under $1,000 of stolen property from a local business.
Kevin Sweetland, manager of the Stephenville Manor, said people left the building in an orderly fashion and returned a short time later after the fire chief gave the go ahead to re-enter the building.
He said there were no injuries as a result. He said these types of incidents don’t happen very often and he was pleased to see that protocol for such an incident was followed.
Stephenville Manor was once a dormitory building located on the former Ernest Harmon Air Force Base with more than 100 one and two bedroom apartment units.
