The newly married couple of Darryl Peddle of Harbour Grace (left) and Melanie Roberge of Quebec are seen making their way along Water Street in Carbonear this afternoon aboard a carriage pulled by Jen, a 26-year-old Clydesdale mixed breed. At the reins is owner Kevin Martland.
It was a momentous occasion for Harbour Grace native Darryl Peddle and Quebecer Melanie Roberge this afternoon, as they were married in a ceremony at Legion Branch No. 23 in Carbonear.
But it was also a milestone moment for Jen, a 26-year-old Clydesdale mixed breed horse.
Following the ceremony, Darryl and his new bride climbed into a carriage and, in a scene fit for a romantic movie, were pulled along Water Street by Jen.
With wedding bells strapped to Jen’s shoulders and a “Just Married” sign attached to the back of the carriage, Jen led a procession of vehicles to the Conception Bay Regional Community Centre, where they posed for photographs.
The horse and carriage is owned by Kevin and Deanna Martland of Carbonear, and
over the years, Jen has spirited about 20 newly married couples off on their first journey together as man and wife.
But Jen has slowed over the years, is reaching the end of her expected lifespan, and has earned a well-deserved break from the spotlight.
Meanwhile, Darryl, 36, is the son of Harold and Theresa Peddle of Harbour Grace. The new couple lives in Quebec, while Darryl works in Alberta.
Their other son, David Peddle, was married Aug. 17 to Darlene Dwyer of Carbonear. They both live in Alberta.
