Those trying to connect by phone with the RCMP in Harbour Grace will find a difference as of today (Oct. 29).
The Harbour Grace detachment has been chosen as the second test site for an enhanced phone system pilot project (The Stephenville detachment has been online for about six months).
The new system is designed to improve efficiency in the way calls are taken and to ensure emergency or high priority calls are answered first.
The new automated system will prompt the caller with three choices:
1. By pressing No. 1 for emergencies, the call will automatically ring on an emergency priority line at the RCMP's operational communications centre in St. John's. These calls will be answered first and police officers will be dispatched.
2. If the public wish to report an incident which requires police response but is not an emergency, callers will be prompted to press No. 2. This call will be answered and again police officers will be dispatched.
3. Should a member of the public have a general inquiry for their local detachment, they will be prompted to press No. 3. This call will be answered by someone in the detachment. Should no one be available there will be an answering service and the public are urged to leave a message for a response from the detachment.
The Harbour Grace detachment can be reached by calling 596-5014.
