A couple suspected of holding up a cab driver, stealing beer and failing to pay for their meal at a local restaurant appeared in provincial court in St. John’s this afternoon.

After a brief appearance in this morning, Evan Lambe, 23, returned to provincial court following a lunch-hour assessment.

Doctors at the Waterford Hospital were unable to make a conclusion about his mental fitness and requested a further seven-day evaluation.

Lambe is due back in court Nov. 6.

Sarah Eisner, 29, made a brief appearance in court. The Crown agreed to her release. She’s staying in jail until she can come up with sureties ordered by the court as a condition of her release.

Couple arrested for armed robbery due in court this afternoon

A 23-year-old man and 29-year-old woman arrested for reportedly holding up a taxi driver last night are due in court this afternoon.

Evan Lambe made a brief appearance just before provincial court in St. John’s closed for lunch today.

He was sent for a lunch-hour psychiatric assessment and is scheduled to return to court this afternoon, as is his co-accused, Sarah Eisnor.

Police say the two went on a crime spree last night.

They reported went to Celtic Hearth restaurant on Water Street and took off without paying. They were said to have flagged down a cab a short distance away. When the taxi driver dropped them off at Prince of Wales Street, Lambe reportedly wielded a knife and demanded cash and cigarettes. They reportedly got away with a small amount of bills and a lot of change.

Lambe and Eisnor also allegedly stole beer from an Ultramar gas station.

The two are charged with armed robbery, fraudulently obtaining food and theft under $5,000.

Lambe also faces seven counts of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, along with seven counts of breaching court orders — four from undertakings and three for violations of probation conditions.
