A young woman from Carbonear offered to give away two of her pumpkins after hearing there was a significant shortage around the Conception Bay North area.
Melissa O’Keefe said she purchased eight of them several weeks ago, but just found out pumpkins were scarce.
“I went in (to St. John’s) yesterday and I didn't know about the shortage,” Melissa said. “It’s a sin.”
Originally the 28-year-old mother of one boy said she was going to give away one, but after hearing there was a demand for them, she thought it wasn’t enough.
“I think I may have two to give away,” she explained. “We will see how it goes.”
The shortage was plastered all over social media sites, with messages from locals looking for pumpkins.
On the eve of Halloween, Melissa still had some uncarved pumpkins, and took to Facebook to find them some new owners.
“Seeing that there are no pumpkins to be found, I'm going to give one of my uncarved pumpkins to the first person who inboxes me,” she wrote.
Within 30 minutes, two women had messaged her, and the results left these two families very happy.
One of the recipients asked to remain anonymous, but she did say she was very thankful and it will be a story she will share every Halloween.
Erin Follett from Harbour Grace was the second recipient of a pumpkin.
The mother of three — seven-year-old Matthew, 10-year-old Abigale and 13-year-old Alexandra — said she had a pumpkin, but someone took it off her front lawn and smashed it.
“(My children) don’t know what happened to theirs,” Erin told The Compass. “I just said the wind must have taken it. They would have been too heartbroken.”
The family called their former jack-o-lantern, “Mr. Jack.”
Erin got home from work after midight to find Mr. Jack destroyed, so she cleaned it up to, “hide the evidence.”
“Now I can tell them the truth,”
She is very happy and said the kids will be too when they find out they can carve a new pumpkin, just in time for Halloween.
Melissa is happy she could help those families that didn’t have pumpkins, and it’s something Erin and the other woman won’t soon forget.
