Donations pour into SPCA in young philanthropist’s name

A vehicle break-in that cost a family bags full of pet supplies it planned to donate to the St. John’s SPCA has proven to be a mixed blessing, as others have pitched in to help make sure animals at the shelter have a great holiday season.

The Ellis family rented Mile One Centre for a skating party on Dec. 14. People brought pet toys, treats and other items along with cash donations. Later that day, Cheryl Ellis, her eight-year-old daughter, Katie, and Cheryl’s mother attended a Christmas concert at Holy Heart Theatre in St. John’s.

After the concert finished, the Topsail family discovered two windows were smashed and the gift bags containing the donated goods were missing from the back seat of the truck.

“My heart sunk,” Cheryl Ellis told The Telegram last week. “I felt like someone just kicked me in the stomach. It was just so disheartening.”

She said the incident scared Katie, who cried.

“There were tears in her eyes,” her mother told The Telegram. “She didn’t know what happened.”

But the story did not end there. It started to get attention on Facebook, and local media shared the Ellis’s plight with a larger audience.

According to Cheryl Ellis, donations have been pouring into the local shelter over the course of a week in Katie’s name. The Ellis family collected more donated supplies, and dropped them off at the St. John’s SPCA shelter on RCAF Road Monday afternoon.

“(Katie) had a wonderful time visiting the animals and sharing with them some of their Christmas treats and toys,” said her mother. “The animals will indeed have the best Christmas ever. In the end, it is only kindness that matters.”
