A Bay de Verde fisherman has received a hefty fine and probation for offenses while fishing snow crab dating back to 2008.
In provincial court in Harbour Grace on Dec. 10, Maurice Noonan was fined $40,500 for four offenses that occurred in 2008 and 2010.
This was due to misreported information in his fishing logbooks, as well as exceeding his maximum allowable catch for snow crab.
Noonan has also been placed on probation for two years and has been prohibited from fishing for the first month of the 2014 snow crab season.
In addition to that, he will have to report his fishing position every 15 minutes for the next five years. He will also need to carry out 25 hours of community service.
Noonan's offenses were identified under Operation Gearshift, a real-time retrospective review of fishing activity in the snow crab and northern shrimp fisheries.
