Interest savings for approved residents

The Town of Carbonear council approved the 2014 budget - worth $5,682,905 - with no hesitation tonight (Jan. 13), which was highlighted by taxes remaining unchanged from last year.

Chair of the town's finance committee, councillor Ray Noel, presents the 2014 town budget.

The only significant change to taxes this year is that those who qualify will be able to apply for interest savings through the town if they do not pay by the deadline.

In an address by the chair of the town’s finance committee, councillor Ray Noel, the budget was referred to as, “balanced.”

“(The town has) a prudent plan with a positive perspective,” he said.

Some of the highlights from this new budget include an increase in funding for the volunteer fire department for remuneration, improvements and repairs, more upgrades to town roads, an asphalt budget increase and a $30,000 contribution to the Sheila NaGeira theatre.

Another thing that stands out in the budget is the creation of a new job, an Economic Development Officer. Although details are scarce at this time, Noel said the council would like to jump on the hiring process as soon as possible to prepare the next town employee for the busy summer season.

The following is a breakdown of some of the budget that was submitted to Municipal Affairs by the Town of Carbonear:

  • Mil rate remains unchanged at 7.6 mills for residences and 10.25 mills for businesses;
  • $25,000 for playground equipment;
  • $30,000 towards water and sewer extension;
  • $20,000 for an electronic sign for the theatre, outside the Conception Bay Regional Community Centre;
  • $12,000 line painter for the public works department;
  • $300,000 for asphalt-related purchases for road repairs;
  • Remuneration for council, $70,000 (unchanged);
  • $114,781 for fire protection services; and
  • $1,667,615 for “transportation services,” including streets, roads and sidewalks, street lighting and snow removal.
