Tourism minister says he was surprised by the news

Mount Pearl South MHA Paul Lane is calling the media together for a news conference at 11 a.m. amid reports that he's crossing the floor and joining the Liberals.

Both VOCM and CBC reported early Monday morning that Lane has quit the PC Party to join the official Opposition.

The news came as a shock for many people; Lane has a reputation as a fierce partisan, and he has held positions within the party as both caucus chair and Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Innovation, Business and Rural Development. Lane would make the second Tory MHA to go to the Liberals, after Tom Osborne joined the caucus last fall.

A recent poll had Premier Kathy Dunderdale as the least popular premier in the country.

Minister surprised by Lane’s plan to cross the floor

Tourism Minister Terry French said that Paul Lane’s apparent defection surprised him.

French, who had an unrelated news conference in C.B.S. this morning, said Lane will have to answer to the people of Mount Pearl on whether joining the Liberals was the right move.

As for Premier Kathy Dunderdale’s leadership, French said he still totally supports her, and she can’t carry all of the blame for the Tories’ current misfortune.

"I think we all shoulder some of the blame," he said.

Liberals should tell Lane to take a powder. He's only an opportunistic puff anyway. Word on the street is French is also looking for a greener pasture?

Lane is taking care of his OWN future; not one bit concerned about his constituents.

Did he take a poll of his constituents to see which party he should join? Perhaps an online poll, he's familiar with those. This guy sees how things are going. He knows the PCs are going out in the next election and he doesn't have the time in to qualify for a pension. The Liberals don't need this kind of person. Let the "poll padder" twist in the wind.

Tom Osborne didn't cross the floor from the PC party; he was an independent and had been for some time before he joined the Liberals.
