Three members of Whaleback Nordic Ski Club will be heading to Clarenville in February to compete at the 2014 Newfoundland and Labrador Winter Games.

Western regionals were held in Stephenville on Saturday, with skiers from St. Anthony’s Aurora Nordic, Blue Cove’s Mt. St. Margaret Nordic, Corner Brook’s Blow Me Down Nordic, Stephenville’s Whaleback Nordic vying for top spot.

“Skiers raced a five-kilometre classic race and a five-kilometre skate race to determine who would make the western team,” said Greg Noonan, vice-president of Whaleback Nordic. “The four boys and four girls with best times in both races combined earned them a berth on the team.”

Jesse Byrne of Whaleback Nordic finished second in the boys races, with a total time of 30:34. John St. Croix, also of Whaleback Nordic, placed third with a total time of 31:36.

The other two competitors to make the male team were Colin Fowlow of Blow Me Down Nordic, who finished first with a time of 30:01, and Daley Merrigan of Blow Me Down with a fourth-place time of 34:10.

Marigold Benoit of Whaleback Nordic finished third in the girls races, with a total time of 38:10.

She’ll be joined on the western team by Angela Cronhelm of Aurora Nordic, who placed first with a time of 36:53; Jamie Merrigan of Blow Me Down, who finished second with a time of 37:33; and Maria Blake of Aurora Nordic, who clocked in at 42:01.

Mr. Noonan praised all the competitors for their efforts and thanked the volunteers who helped make the local races a success.
