PC cabinet minister yet to make final decision on candidacy

Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Kent, the MHA for Mount Pearl North, confirmed today he has yet to rule out a run for the premier’s chair.

In an emailed response to questions from The Telegram, Kent says he is seriously considering putting his name forward for the PC leadership race.

“At this time, I am giving serious consideration to running for the leadership of the Progressive Conservative Party of Newfoundland and Labrador,” he states. “This decision is one I am making with careful deliberation, and discussion with my family, my constituents, and my fellow MHAs.

“Ultimately, I want to do what's best for our party and our province.”

Several of Kent’s fellow cabinet members have already ruled out their own play for the leader’s chair — including Susan Sullivan and Kevin O’Brien — in the wake of the resignation of Kathy Dunderdale and the appointment of Tom Marshall as interim premier.

That said, plenty of names with longtime party ties are being floated as potential contenders.

“I am encouraged to see strong interest in this process, both internally, within our party and externally and I look forward to an exciting campaign and convention,” Kent states.

Steve Kent has yet to rule out a run for the Premier's chair ? Is he alright ? This is as funny as the skit from Monty Python's Flying Circus. They had the Minister of Silly Walks; we've got Steve Kent, Minister of Municipal Affairs.

You have to be joking! My son save your money! If you win the leadership we won't have to waste our time having an election, just pass the reins over to the Liberals!

Yes Bye, bring it on. Kent would be an asset to help bring the Liberals back into power. The Liberals are loving this storyline.

I don't think we are speaking of who the next premier will be, but rather, who will be the next leader of the PC Party in NL. I say to Steve Kent, "Go for it"! I am so sick and tired of hearing you speak about "my team". Wipe the brown residue off your nose, take a shot at the leadership, lose and bid us fond farewell, please!!!

That quote probably should have said: "Ultimately I want to do what's best for ME"! Once a boy scout the stripe never changes.

And so the circus begins. Somebody needs to talk to him before he embarasses himself. Oooops, too late.

My comment is not as much about KENT AS IT IS ABOUT WHO ELSE MIGHT BR INTERESTED. i THINK THERE SHOULD BE A DRAFT SEN. BETH MARSHALL. SHE WAS A STRONG MINISTER AND AUDITOR GENERAL AND WOULD MAKE AN EXCELLENT PREMIER.

Dunderdale was the biggest asset for the Liberals. Steve Kent is a Dunderdale in a cheap suit. Go ahead and run, hopefully you will win the PC leadership and ensure a Liberal win.
