The winter storm hitting the province played a bit of havoc with the power in Corner Brook Friday morning.

Just before 9 a.m. outages occurred in several parts of the city and also the Bay of Islands area. People on the west side of the city, including the Country Road, Bayview Heights, Sunnyslope area and Curling all reported losing power.

Michelle Coughlan, Newfoundland Power’s director of corporate communications, said the outage was weather related.

“As a result really of the heavy snow, high winds and blowing snow,” said Coughlan.

Coughlan said in the initial stages of the outage the power company “was able to get a big chunk of customers on relatively quickly and then we worked to restore power to the remaining customers.”

Power was restored to remaining areas just before 11 a.m. Coughlan said the outages lasted for anywhere from an hour to an hour and a half.

She also said Newfoundland Power was on alert for more trouble.

“All of our crews are ready to respond accordingly if we do get any outages as a result of the severe weather that’s flowing across the island today.”

Currently, Newfoundland Power is reporting a weather related outage in Margaree. Power went out there just before noon and is expected to be restored by 1:30 p.m.
