Family of missing Bay Roberts resident shares memories of a shy, quiet man who loves hockey

For the past several days, Bay Roberts resident Andrew Lush has been the focus of a desperate search and rescue effort, with his name and image being broadcast far and wide by media outlets.

Bay Roberts resident Andrew Lush, 37, has been missing since early Saturday (Feb. 15) morning. Any person with information are asked to call the Trinity Conception RCMP at 596-5014.

But who is this 37-year-old man who walked away from a Water Street bar during the early morning hours of Saturday, Feb. 15 and hasn’t been seen since?

The Compass spoke with several members of his family at their home on Cross Road today (Feb. 18), including his mother, Betty.

“He is a good person,” she noted, her voice straining under the uncertainty and unanswered questions the family has faced in recent days.

Andy, as he is best known, has one brother, Corey, and three sisters – Lacey, Tracey and Jeannette. He is not married, and does not have any children.

Those close to him describe Andy as a quiet, shy individual.

“Everybody likes Andy,” his mother noted. “He never has anything bad to say about anyone.”

A part-time worker at Moorfrost in Bay Roberts, it is not uncommon to see Andy strolling one of the many roads in his hometown.

He loves the outdoors and enjoys spending some of this time trekking to his favourite fishing hole, a pole leaning on his shoulder.

And like many Canadians, he loves hockey.

“He enjoys going and watching hockey games as well,” noted Betty.

Andrew’s sister-in-law, Melanie Molloy, said Andy is quick to help out a family member, though it always doesn’t end well.

During one trouting expedition, she said Andy fell in the water while trying to catch a frog for his niece, Claire.

“That’s the kind of person he was,” said Pauline.

The family home, meanwhile, is a sombre place as Betty and others await word on the fate of their loved one.

“We don’t know what to think,” she said.

An extensive search by air, land and sea has been ongoing, led by the RCMP and volunteers with the Avalon North Wolverines search and rescue group.

Crews have been searching the water around Moorfrost and the Royal Canadian Legion, as well as canvassing the area around the Cross Road on foot.

Andy was last seen early Saturday morning at a bar on Water Street in Bay Roberts. He stands five-foot seven-inches (1.7 metres) tall and 240 pounds with light brown hair and green eyes and was wearing blue jeans, a grey T-shirt, a blue zip-up hoodie, a baseball hat and a pair of light brow work boots at the time of his disappearance.

Police are asking any member of the public who may have information to contact them at 596-5014.
