For people like Olga Wiseman, composting makes a lot of sense.

The Deer Lake resident was happy to hear town council is looking for ways to improve and expand the composting site on Old Bonne Bay Road, possibly even relocating within the next few months.

Council discussed the site at its public meeting Monday night. The current provincial waste management plan shows that the dumping facility in Deer Lake could be closed in two years. Composting is a major component of how council hopes to reduce garbage in the area in anticipation of the possible closure.

The representatives discussed the possibility of a site with some kind of a solid foundation for the composting, as well as moving it to another area to allow for more expansion.

“As long as they move it to someplace where people can find it,” said Wiseman, who has been composting all winter and will drop it off at the site when it gets warmer.

“I hope they take better care of it and people follow the rules there.”

Wiseman was one of the compost site users who sounded the alarm last summer after finding garbage dumped in the area. At one point, several mattresses were discovered, as well as numerous plastic garbage bags and even the bumper of an old car.

Public works staff cleaned it up, but questions remained about whether enough people were using it and if it is draining properly. These are questions that council hopes to explore in the coming weeks.

Coun. Amanda Freake said bringing the town into the future is key to a successful program.

“We have to educate people as to where composting is going,” she said after the meeting. “We don’t want to be in a situation where we have (a limited time) to teach people if our landfill site does have to be closed.”

Freake said changes would need to be made and she is not opposed to keeping the site in its current place. Looking at other areas, she said, could give the community and council some ideas.

Composting could be a requirement once the province’s plans come to fruition, she said, and preparation is essential.
