The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has confirmed that the person who died in a house fire Saturday afternoon is an adult male.

In a news release issued late Saturday afternoon, police said investigators were still trying to determine the cause of the fire on McKay Street.

A woman in the home managed to escape and was treated in hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

The RNC said it is working with the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause of death and to confirm the victim’s identity.

One person is dead and another injured as the result of a fire that happened Saturday afternoon in St. John’s.

The deceased, whose age and sex has not been released, did not manage to escape the house on McKay Street, which sustained extensive damage. The injured person was found in the middle of the street when fire crews arrived. That person received treatment at the scene and was later sent to hospital.

The house was attached on one side, but St. John’s Regional Fire Department Supt. Derek Chafe said the attached home only sustained minor smoke damage.

Fire investigators with the Royal Newfoundland Constabulary are still attempting to determine the cause of the fire. Chafe said it appeared the fire initially spread through the first-floor area.

Newfoundland Power and paramedics were also present at the scene. Both McKay Street and a portion of Leslie Street are closed to traffic as of Saturday afternoon.
