Type 1 diabetes athlete Sebastien Sasseville, right, had the company of Derek Anderson and Nancy Jewer on his run into Corner Brook Monday.

Sebastien Sasseville, endurance athlete, six-time Ironman and one of more than three million Canadians living with diabetes, arrived in Corner Brook Monday.

Sasseville is running across the country on a personal mission to educate others with diabetes to pursue their dreams. He began the 7,500-kilometre journey to “Outrun Diabetes” on Feb. 2 in St. John’s and is scheduled to finish in Vancouver Nov. 14 — World Diabetes Day.

His stop in Corner Brook marks 646-km into his trek. His visit included an opportunity for members of the community to meet him for a public keynote and information booth on the Animas Vibe insulin pump.

“I’m doing this run because I want people to be inspired to live life to the fullest no matter what challenges they face,” Sasseville stated in a prepared release.

“Outrun Diabetes is about overcoming obstacles, whether it’s diabetes or any other hurdles people are dealing with in their lives. I hope people will follow my journey and be motivated to achieve their own personal goals.”

Diagnosed with diabetes in 2002, Sasseville was the first Canadian with Type 1 diabetes to reach the summit of Mount Everest. He also competed in Egypt’s Sahara Race — a 250-km self-supported ultra-marathon. His latest challenge will cover a distance equal to 180 back-to-back-marathons.

His route includes stops in Halifax, Moncton, Quebec City, Montreal, Ottawa, Windsor, Toronto, Winnipeg, Regina, Saskatoon, Edmonton and Calgary before he reaches the finish line in Vancouver. Events will be held in each location and local communities are invited to come out to meet Sasseville along the way.

Sasseville, a resident of Quebec City, is a member of Team Novo Nordisk — a global all-diabetes sports team of cyclists, triathletes and runners. He is also a frequent public speaker.
