A new $150-million long-term care facility on Newfoundland Drive in St. John's is nearing completion and is expected to be open in September.

Health Minister Susan Sullivan and Eastern Health president and CEO Vickie Kaminski toured the facility this morning and provided an update on it.

The facility will consist of two residential buildings, connected by links to a centre building that houses the main entrance, clinical space, cafeteria and the facility’s main kitchen.

It will accommodate about 460 beds and include space for recreation therapy, physiotherapy, occupational therapy and spirituality. It will also contain protective care units for people with dementia, dedicated beds for bariatric care, enhanced short stay services such as respite and convalescence care and specialized behavioural services for seniors.

“This new facility will have a lasting legacy for the people of this region and on the delivery of long-term care services in the province. Beyond the medical scope, this new facility is about taking care of people’s loved ones and providing them with a home," Sullivan said. "Residents will benefit from specialized programs and services that are tailored to the levels of care they require. In addition, they will also have access to therapeutic areas like gardens, gathering rooms and spaces for families and loved ones.”

Kaminski said the facility is large and very modern and will provide both a high quality of life for residents and an improved working environment for employees.

"With the facility currently in the final stages of development, our commitment is to transition residents and staff to the new location with as little disruption as possible,” Kaminski said.

Is this a delayed opening? I thought it was to open this summer? Was this brought up at all in the press announcement today?

You could put anyone there and you would probably say the same thing. Habitual complainers around here.

OK now Minister Sullivan and Ms Vicki please tell us where the staff is coming from to make this facility run the way it should when we are already extended to the limit and don't even have enough people to properly provide the level of care in the homes we have now. REMEMBER MINISTER SULLIVAN? You and the so called government you are so proudly a part of cut 35-40 MILLION from Health Care to 'IMPROVE PATIENT QUALITY OF CARE"....What an absolute joke.
