In the midst of one of the coldest winters in recent memory, staff at The Compass in Carbonear decided to fight back against the glacial-like conditions that have been besieging the region in recent days.

Pictured here are, from left, Nicholas Mercer, Terry Roberts, Kevin Hiscock, Jim Harris, Shelleen Emberley and Amanda Pike. Behind the camera is reporter/photographer Melissa Jenkins, who was bundled up in a thick jacket.

We dug out the barbecue and lawn chairs, donned some Hawaiian and Mexican style clothing, and stepped out onto the sidewalk in front of our Water Street office this afternoon.

Ignoring the fact that the windchill was driving temperatures to 17 degrees Celsius below the freezing mark, we barbecued some burgers and drew plenty of curious stares from passing motorists.

Spring can’t be far off.

Great pic/idea! It put a smile on my face when I first saw it (and with each subsequent visit to the online site). Good way to look 'Cold Man Winter' right in the face~
