Lower Island Cove resident beats out field of four in Lions Club event

Lower Island Cove’s Zachary LeShane captured first place at the Old Perlican Lions Club senior high public speaking competition held at Baccalieu Collegiate on March 3.

The Old Perlican Lions Club helds its annual speak-off competition at Baccalieu Collegiate in Old Perlican on March 3. Gull Island's Zachary LeShane (second from right) took the victory, while Kobe Doyle (far left), Tori Oliver (second from left) and Carissa Garland also participated in the event.

The Level II student was one of four participants to take part in an event that has traditionally been very competitive and a showcase for some of the best and brightest in the area.

LeShane, 16, spoke with confidence and passion on the influence of the media, said one of the organizers.

It was enough to garner him the victory over a tough field that also included Level II students Tori Oliver (environmental paradigms) and Carissa Garland (homosexuality and the Sochi Olympics), as well as Level I student Kobe Doyle (the human cost of the clothing on our backs).

All students are from Baccalieu Collegiate.

Oliver was runner-up.

Each student spoke with pinpoint precision, said one of the organizers.

In the past, LeShane has spoke on topics such as bullying, outmigration and Muskrat Falls.

LeShane and Oliver will be moving on to the zone speaking competition, scheduled for March 19 in Bay Roberts. Should either of them be lucky enough to win the zone competition, they will be eligible for the provincial event later this year.
