A former Mayor of the Town of Burin has passed away.

Former Burin Mayor Jerry Appleby

Jerry Appleby died suddenly Friday, Mar. 7, at the Health Science Centre. Although not directly related, he had been been ill for a number of years.

Mr. Appleby, 62, was a councillor with the town for 27 years and served as deputy-mayor for six years and mayor for three terms (12 years) during the nineties.

His volunteer service with the town also involved 41 years with the Masonic Lodge, founding member of the Boot Shrine Club, Burin Volunteer Fire Department and Holy Trinity Anglican Church.

He was married to his wife of 40 years, Ella, and they had three daughters, a son and four grandchildren. Mr. Appleby is also survived by his mother, Muriel, and three siblings.

He was pre-deceased by his father, Fred. Both men operated Appleby’s Supermarket, a main business in the community for decades.

Funeral Service will take place at Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Ship Cove, Wednesday, Mar. 12, at 2 p.m. with cremation to follow.
