Even though he’s the newest member of the Stephen Awards committee, Paul Noseworthy already knows the value of volunteering in the community.

Amber LeRoy receives the Stephens Award for youth of the year from committee member Don Gibbon at last year’s awards ceremony. Nominations for this year’s awards are due on March 21.

He’s been an actively involved in various local groups and organizations for many years and is currently the mayor of Kippens, which is itself a volunteer role.

“There are many benefits of volunteering,” he said. “You get to know the people in your community and find out what’s going on. That’s what it’s really all about – being a part of the community.”

Mr. Noseworthy said he’s excited to help organize the Stephen Awards because they help shine a light on those that give freely of their time to help others.

“Being nominated for a Stephen Award shows the person the time they’ve put into volunteering is appreciated,” he said. “Without volunteers, we wouldn’t have a lot of the programs that we have here in the Kippens and Stephenville area.”

All residents of Stephenville, Kippens, Noel's Pond and Cold Brook can be nominated for the five competitive Stephen Awards: Citizen of the Year; Youth of the Year, which is open to those attending secondary school in Stephenville; Junior Male and Junior Female Athletes of the Year, for those 21-years-old or younger as of Dec. 31, 2013; and Senior Athlete of the Year.

Outstanding Volunteer Work certificates, which are non-competitive, are also presented annually. These nominees can reside anywhere in the Bay St. George area if their volunteer work was done in the Town of Stephenville or the Town of Kippens in 2013.

Local organizations can nominate up to three candidates in each of the competitive categories, and one in the volunteer appreciation category.

Nominations forms must be received by a committee member – or dropped off to the Georgian office, CFSX radio station, Stephenville Town Hall or Kippens Town Hall – by March 21.

The Stephen Awards banquet is scheduled for April 13 at the Royal Canadian Legion in Stephenville. Cocktails start at 6 p.m and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are currently available at Debbie’s Video Shoppe in Stephenville.
