The Princess Sheila NaGeira Theatre was packed for the second of three grand concerts April 9, which showcased some highlights from the 44th Carbonear Kiwanis regional music festival competition.

Some of the members of the Crescent Collegiate vocal ensemble hung around after the concert to take a few photos with the choral Rose Bowl. They were, front (l-r) — Erica Newhook, Alyssa McCarthy, Rianna Hickey, Mackenzie Smith, Morgan Ledrew and Heather Higdon; back — Rachel Burry, Jessica McCarthy, Robert Colbourne, Abigal Drover, Sarah George, Celeste Burry, Melanie Domonie, Brianna Lewis and Taylor Harnum. Missing from photo — Breanne Cumby, Emily Manning, Skye Johnson, Tia Murphy-Rowe, Shae-Lynn Lahey, Heidi Smith, Taylor Moore, Kayla Pretty, Sarah Knight, Julia Pollett-Nurse, Kelsey Sheppard, Rebecca Higdon, Gracie Dawe, Emma Gilbert, Mackenzie Mercer, Morgan Lahey and Leanne George

Crescent Collegiate in Blaketown was well represented, with three of its performance groups recognized at the concert — the vocal ensemble, concert choir and concert band. The vocal ensemble walked away with the most sought after award, the Rose Bowl, while the other groups took runner-up in each respective category.

The school’s music teacher and Carbonear native Robert Colbourne was thrilled with the accomplishments of his entries in the festival.

“I am very proud of the hard work they have put into (these performances),” he said at the end of the concert.

The vocal ensemble consists of 31 female singers from Grade 7 to Level III, who practice three times a week.

Colbourne said the girls even give up their lunch break twice a week, and an hour after school for the third practice. Each performer wore a floor-length black gown while singing.

It is not the first time this group has seen the spotlight. Last summer, it performed on Parliament Hill in Ottawa for Canada Day and has been an invited guest to many community events. The group also received the highest mark at this year’s festival, a 94.

There were two Rose Bowls presented April 9, with the first for instrumental performance; the second was to the choral group.

Colbourne’s instrumental group took runner-up, while Amalgamated Academy’s traditional ensemble took the Rose Bowl.

Runner-up for the choral award was the Crescent Collegiate concert choir.
