They came from as far away as Port aux Basques to meet Kaetlyn Osmond in Marystown Saturday.

The two-time Canadian women’s figure skating champion and Olympic silver medalist arrived in Newfoundland Thursday morning for a visit over the Easter holiday.

She was welcomed back to her hometown this morning with a motorcade from the Summer Games Building to the Peninsula Mall. There, a throng of enthusiastic fans and supporters were waiting to greet her.

Mayor Sam Synard presented a beaming Ms. Osmond with the Key to Marystown at the rally.

The symbolic gesture is a first for the town, the mayor noted, suggesting more names may be added to a plaque at the town hall going forward.

“Hopefully, we can encourage and inspire other people to do great things to promote Marystown on a provincial, national and world stage.”

The honour is one of several surprises the Town of Marystown has in store for her during the visit, he noted.

Ms. Osmond, proudly sporting a Team Canada jacket with the medal she won as part of the team figure skating event at this year’s Winter Games in Sochi, Russia hanging around her neck, thanked everyone for their support.

“Being back here, it really feels like this is definitely where it all began ..." Kaetlyn Osmond

“Being back here, it really feels like this is definitely where it all began, and when I get those interviews where they’re wondering where I actually say I’m from, the more support I get from here, it’s getting harder to say I’m from both,” she told the crowd, referring to Marystown, where she was born, and Alberta, where she now lives and trains.

A large number of people waited in line to get an autograph and have their picture taken with the young skater.

Jolyne Peddle, who said she and some family members drove several hours and stayed in Marystown overnight for the opportunity to meet Ms. Osmond, acknowledged it was “worth every bit of it.”

Ms. Osmond is the special guest at a dinner in her honour this evening at St. Gabriel’s Hall. Tomorrow, she will take part in a special ice show at Marystown Arena organized by the town and Ice Crystal Skating Club.

Both events are sold out.

Special thanks to Clyde and Darrin for giving kaetlyn absolutely nothing to help her train. We know where they are now though.
