More than 20 volunteer firefighters are working relentlessly to contain a fire that started early afternoon in the old Bond Theatre on Water Street in Carbonear.

The entire downtown area of Carbonear is now covered in a chalky haze as dense smoke continues to billow from the old wooden structure at the intersection of Water and Bond streets.

An officer with the brigade said it appears all neighbouring structures, including dwellings, apartments and businesses, are safe.

It's not known what caused the fire, but the building appears to be a total loss.

Firefighters are attacking the blaze from every angle, including from above with an aerial ladder truck.

Luckily, the winds are light, which is aiding firefighters' efforts to stop the fire from spreading.

More to come later.

A lot of memories gone up in smoke...i.e. Mr. Nicki Thomas, Mr. Fred Chubs,Mr. Jeff Davis growing up on his mother's lap there as she sold movie tickets for $0.35cents... lots of scottie chip bags flying during film breakages, nearby Harry Cole's restaurant and Jane Tilley's for a plate of chips, and wonderful movies... Might caution the brave and fantastic firefighters about wearing protective breathing apparatus, and evacuating all downwind of the fire, and the clean-up, as I understood that old building possibly had a lot of asbestos concerns. Did the fire fighting crews from neighboring towns come to help put the fire out?
