The fire at the old Bond Theatre may be out, but the hustle and bustle on Water Street in Carbonear continued into the next morning, April 24.

All that remained of the Bond Theatre after a fire yesterday April 23.

Many residents stopped in front of the charred remnants of the iconic building for a final look at a piece of the town’s history.

Cameras and camera phones were snapping photos, neighbours were gazing through windows and people driving their vehicles slowed down for a look.

There is still yellow police tape barricading the perimeter.

The feeling has been sombre.

The smell of burnt wood and ashes is strong, and there are still smoking embers. But the fire department left earlier this morning, after a night of dousing the pile.

The building opened in 1949 and was a theatre until the 1970s. It was most recently the home of The Trophy Hut.

The building had just been rented and a store was going to open on May 19th.

The Compass will have more details from the owner and the group that was renting the building shortly.
