It has been nine years since Kay Sheppard of Harbour Grace lost her courageous battle with breast cancer.

Kay was the owner of Kay’s Restaurant in the town until 2002, when sister-in-law Kathy Tetford took over.

Two months after her death, friends and family held an event in her honour — Kay’s Day.

The event has grown to a weekend-long fundraiser for the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Care Foundation.

This year marked the 10th anniversary of the event.

A fish and brewis supper, goods bingo, a church service, a dance and local entertainment were held in various venues across Harbour Grace April 25 and 26.

Today (April 30) a group of volunteers that took part in Kay’s Day went to St. John’s to present a cheque for some $14,280 during the 590 VOCM annual radio-thon for the foundation.

More to come.
