Accused armed robber in Shearstown incident appears in court

The search for a man suspected of committing an armed robbery in Shearstown, Conception Bay ended when he was arrested yesterday evening (May 6).

Barry Austin Morningstar appeared in Harbour Grace Provincial Court late this morning (May 7) after a weeklong manhunt to face a litany of charges, including possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, pointing a firearm and robbery with a firearm.

The 21-year-old was apprehended last night at 6 p.m. in St. John’s, after a warrant was issued for his arrest on April 29. Few details have been released on the incident.

The RCMP, RNC and the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit have been, and continue to, investigate the incident.

Staff Sgt. Bud Bennett told The Compass information obtained in the investigation led to 47 Freshwater Road, where Morningstar has been known to reside. A warrant was then issued to enter the home.

The RNC entered the house and apprehended Morningside, who was turned over to the RCMP and transported to the detachment in Harbour Grace.

Morningstar, originally from Niagara Falls, Ontario, sat calmly in court this morning with hands and feet shackled until his appearance just before noon.

His identifying tattoo, the word “morning” across his forearm and a five-point star on his elbow, was visible as he sat with his hands folded in his lap.

Defense lawyer Jeff Slade represented Morningstar in court.

Judge Colin Flynn, a court judge from St. John’s, appeared by videoconference in Harbour Grace Provincial Court.

Morningstar will remain in custody at least until a bail hearing on Friday, May 9 at Harbour Grace provincial court.

Honestly this young man looks like he's posing for a men's magazine. Too bad he chose the wrong path in life-still young enough to change though...for the better.
