The direct route will operate daily during the summer. For the remainder of the year, three flights per week will travel to-and-from Newfoundland on Monday, Thursday, and Saturday.
Air Canada senior vice-president for regional markets Kevin Howlett said the move was made to accommodate the increased demand for business and leisure opportunities on both sides of the Atlantic.
The news of year-round flights from St. John’s to London was warmly received by those on hand, including Innovation, Business and Rural Development Minister Susan Sullivan, who made note of the economic opportunities this news creates.
Sharon Horan, chairwoman for the St. John’s Board of Trade, was also pleased to hear today’s news. Her organization has been advocating for years to get year-round flights to London. She said that service will make St. John’s more accessible to all of Europe and vice-versa.
St. John’s International Airport Authority president and CEO Keith Collins said the case has been made for the service’s viability, adding there is potential down the road to increase the number of weekly flights.
The new year-round service starts Oct. 26, leaving St. John’s at 12:40 a.m. and arriving at London Heathrow at 11:05 a.m. Return flights to St. John’s will depart from London at 11:05 a.m. and arrive back in Newfoundland at 1:05 p.m. local time.
