An RCMP spokesman says the health centre in Old Perlican is now “deemed safe” due to a heavy police presence, and the search is now on for an individual suspected of making an unspecified threat late this morning.
The health centre is open for emergencies only, and an early dismissal is also planned for nearby Baccalieu Collegiate, which was placed in secure mode this afternoon.
Police officers rushed to the community in large numbers after receiving word that a person had issued a threat, and the health centre was placed on lock-down.
Police are not confirming the nature of the threat, or if an altercation took place at the health centre. Police are also stressing that no threat was made towards the school, and do not believe there is a threat to the general public.
The place-of-residence of the suspect is not known, but an officer said the suspect is not an employee at the health centre.
The Compass will have more information as it becomes available.
