The Liberal Party of Newfoundland and Labrador has selected its candidate for the district of Stephenville East-St. George’s, the party said in a prepared release.

Scott Reid secured the nomination after party members living in the district voted Monday evening at polling locations in Stephenville, Stephenville Crossing, St. George’s, McKays and Upper Ferry.

Reid was in the running with Thomas Rose and Corrine Slade to carry the Liberal banner into a byelection for the district.

The date of a byelection has yet to be announced to replace the seat left vacant by the resignation of Progressive Conservative MHA and cabinet minister Joan Shea back in June.

A Progressive Conservative candidate is yet to be selected for the district.

The PC party must be happy with this. Somehow "the Liberals" nominate a person nobody in the district knows, who didn't visit the area to campaign, and who probably will never live in the area again. The PCs now just have to put a decent local candidate in place and they can win this seat (which was pretty much a lock for the Liberals had they put in a name people recognized). Major strategical error here. Liberal party members will be sorry they voted this way.

We had more people from the St. John's liberal office floating through here in the last couple of days. But you won't see them again until election time when they want your vote.

He has not lived in the district for 30 years. I don't think he really knows our issues. Just another opportunist looking for a high salary and rich pension.

Mr Reid, I would like to " Know " one thing. Where do you see the economy to, In the first four years of your term? If the people would " Support " you? Please explain in complete detail, Because I for one, is sick and tired of seeing our people leaving home for work, when we live in the richest " Province " in Canada. We need people of " Vision " to bring us forwards.
