Members of the Tri Con Gentle Giants Special Olympic team take part in the annual Trinity Conception Special Olympic Law Enforcement Torch Run in Bay Roberts on July 20.

Sporting bright green shirts, the crowd made their way from the Beaver Plaza Mall to the Bay Arena for celebrations which included a barbecue, activities put on by the Town of Bay Roberts and the chance to ‘Soak a Mountie’ in the dunk tank.

The first to take the plunge was Sgt. Greg Hicks in full uniform, followed by Bay Roberts Fire Chief Adam Norman.

“The RCMP Law Enforcement Torch Run is an opportunity for Special Olympians to celebrate the incredible accomplishments they have achieved in their games throughout the year,” said Cst. Dan Sharpe, LETR organizer, Trinity Conception RCMP.  “Through the incredible support and commitment of the Town of Bay Roberts, the Fire Department and local businesses this annual event continues to grow and is now a collaborative effort put forth by the entire community."

The Trinity Conception LETR is the largest Special Olympics club fundraising event in the province as each year the Gentle Giants surpass other NL clubs.

Last year alone they raised over $17,000 and this year they raised over $22,000. All proceeds of the fundraiser go towards supporting the club’s activities throughout the year, including the provincial games which take place every July.

“Our athletes look forward to the LETR event all year for both the opportunity to fundraise and to celebrate. This event has grown so much in the past few years and the dunk tank has become the main attraction for the athletes,” said Gina Bishop, club coordinator, Tri-Con Gentle Giants. “I would like to extend a warm thank you to our athletes, organizing volunteers, RCMP, the Town of Bay Roberts, the town Fire Department, numerous local businesses who provide generous donations and community members who pledge their support to our organization each year. None of this would be possible without this collective effort.”

The Special Olympics LETR is an international initiative with events held within communities throughout Canada by law enforcement officers.
