The Town of Harbour Grace has joined a list of communities in the province that have implemented an outdoor fire ban.

An announcement was made this morning through the town’s Facebook page that a ban is effective immediately.

“The Harbour Grace fire chief has placed a complete fire ban on all outdoor fires until further notice,” the post said.

Although no specifics were mentioned in the posting, other communities have placed a ban on fire pits, fire bowls, fireworks and chimneas.

On July 21, the provincial government placed a fire ban on all regions, citing “dry weather and hot temperatures” as the reason. The forest fire index was at extreme levels at the time.

But on July 25, the ban was lifted for the island portion of the province, no longer limiting residents.

Harbour Grace decided to go ahead with the ban today, despite the lift from the provincial government.

The Compass has arranged to speak with Fire Chief Ray Verge later today. More details will be provided when they become available.
